World's First Computer Mouse (1964): by Douglas Engelbart

The world's first computer mouse was made by Douglas Engelbart in 1964, it consisted of two gear-wheels positioned perpendicular to each other -- allowing movement on one axis. Ergonomic shape, great button placement -- and it's made of wood.

Gypsy Thief's Steampunk Charger

If you always have had a thing for Steampunk creations, you are going to love this Steampunk iPhone/iPod charger coming straight from the Thin Gypsy Thief's Steampunk Gear.

Kyle Miller (aka Thin Gypsy Thief), while giving final touches to his guitar, came up with the idea of a Steampunk dock for the iPhone/iPod. He thinks that this could be the kind of charger Tim Burton might need for his iPod or iPhone. The charger works pretty well and we hope to see it sometime at the Thin Gypsy Thief's Etsy shop.

Vacuum Ball

The Dust Ball is designed to roll around on your floor, propelled by an internal motor that shifts the center of gravity to make it move. When the battery is depleted the Dust Ball rolls back into its charging hoop, while a full container will cause it to stop and glow.

That sounds neat, but there's a reason other existing robotic cleaners are low and squat, as this allows them to get under furniture where dust bunnies tend to hide. The Dust Ball's big size also means it's going to have a hard time cleaning up close to the wall.

World's First X-Ray (1895): Röntgen's wife hand

In 1895 Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, professor of physics the University of Wurburg in Germany, was doing experiments with electrical discharges in evacuated glass tubes. Late in 1895 Wilhelm Röntgen was alone at night doing his experiments, this time in the dark and noticed a glow was produced on the wall, which he knew was not caused by fluorescence or visible light. He named these new, unidentified rays 'X' or if you prefer; X-rays.
After several months of playing with his discovery he noticed that objects place in the path of the rays cast shadows and created images on the wall. Soon after he used a photgraphic plate and had his wife, Frau Röntgen, place her hand in the path of the X-rays, creating the world's first X-ray picture. In 1901 Wilhelm Röntgen was awarded the very first Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery.

Rubik's Cube Charger

The Rubik's Cube has conquered the world not just as a plaything, but as a useful device and this is proved by the new conceptual Rubik's Cube Magic Charger that can charge your gadgets. While the entire World is thinking to save energy and we celebrate Earth Hour and Earth Day, or Environment Day, still, there is a dearth of certain concrete steps taken in this direction. But this new concept of charging your mobile phone or MP3 player, etc. via Rubik Cube is revolutionary.

This Magic Charger saves energy that is converted to electric waves used in charging the gadgets. This energy is saved in the internal lithium-ion battery while we play with the cube and electro magnetic induction principles let the cube harness some energy to be further converted for use. I guess you must be wondering from where the charging slots are located; you need to pull the Rubik cube upwards to locate the USB charger. Now you won't think that it is worthless to play with a Rubik Cube, as you would be contributing towards the sustainable development.

World's First Motorcycle (1885): Daimler's "riding car"

The First Motorcycle was designed and built by the German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Bad Cannstatt (Stuttgart) in 1885. It was essentially a motorised bicycle, although the inventors called their invention the Reitwagen ("riding car"). It was also the first petroleum-powered vehicle.

A Study Says."Heart attacks more serious in morning"

Heart attacks that occur in the morning are likely to be more serious than attacks at other times of the day, a specialist journal reported on Wednesday.

Spanish researchers looked at data from 811 patients who had been admitted to a Madrid clinic with a myocardial infarction between 2003 and 2009.

They used levels of an enzyme in the blood to measure the extent of dead tissue, known as an infarct, which is caused by blocked blood supply to heart muscle.

Those who had had a heart attack between 6:00 am and noon, during the transition from darkness to light, had a 21-percent larger infarct compared with patients whose attack occurred between 6:00 pm and midnight.

The study, published in the British journal Heart, builds on previous evidence that circadian rhythm -- the famous "body clock" -- influences the heart in many ways such as blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output and the function of cells that line cardiac blood vessels.

Of the 811 patients, 269 had their heart attacks in the period from 6:00 am to noon. More than three-quarters of the patients admitted to the clinic were men. Their average age was 62.

The findings should be useful in assessing the effectiveness of drugs against heart disease, the researchers said.(AFP)

Self Making ‘Easy Bed'

Humanity has risen to a whole new level of laziness…er convenience. This bed is actually capable of making itself! From an untidy bed to one that looks like it's owned by a clean freak, this interesting invention definitely brings beds to a whole new level of automation.

Retrophone Charger

This weird gadget is called the iRetrofone Steampunk Copper iPhone 4 dock, and it looks pretty sweet since it allows you to use the retro handset to use the phone while it's docked. The dock is made out of copper, so it's quite heavy. But it's not its weight that is the only substantial thing. It'll weigh heavily on your bank account too.

Each one is sculpted, cast, and polished by hand artist Scott Freeland, which is why it sells for $450 (USD). Wow, talk about pricey! Heck, that's more than two iPhone 4s. At least there's no 2-year contract required with it.(Link)

Human Washing Machine

If machines can wash our clothes, why can't they wash our bodies? Sure, they can. As a matter of fact, Sanyo demonstrated this concept almost 40 years ago. This so-called Ultrasonic Bath can wash your body automatically. The user should climb into the opening on top of the machine via a ladder.

After setting temperature, the pre-rise cycle begins. The ultrasonic bath will spray the user with hot water and the process will last for 5 minutes. Then the pod-shaped will be filled with hot water and will offer a 3-minute massage bath. At last, a cloud of air bubbles generated by ultrasonic wave generator will take the dirt off the skin. Bingo, you're clean now. Oh, wait a minute, this machine provides drying services as well.(Link)

Hunt begins for Mona Lisa model

FLORENCE: A team of researchers in Italy has begun a search for the tomb of a woman who may have been the model for Leonardo Da Vinci's painting Mona Lisa.

The team is using a special radar device at the convent in the city of Florence where it thinks the body of the woman, Lisa Gherardini, is buried.

It hopes to find skull fragments and to try to create a facial reconstruction.
The identity of the enigmatic Mona Lisa remains one of the great mysteries of the art world.

World's First Novel (1007): Tale of Genji

More than a thousend years ago, on 1007, a Japanese court lady put the finishing touches on what is considered the world's first novel. Spanning 75 years, more than 350 characters, and brimming with romantic poems, the "Tale of Genji" tells the story of an emperor's son, his quest for love, and the many women he meets along the way. It is attributed to the Japanese noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu.

Creative Baby Mop

Make your children work for their keep. After the birth of a child there's always the temptation to say "Yes, it's cute, but what can it do?" Until recently the answer was simply "lie there and cry," but now babies can be put on the payroll, so to speak, almost as soon as they're born. Just dress your young one in Baby Mops and set him or her down on any hard wood or tile floor that needs cleaning. (Link)

World’s First Digital Camera (1975): Created by Kodak's engineer Steve Sasson

In December 1975, Kodak engineer Steve Sasson invented something that would, decades later, revolutionize photography: the world’s first digital camera.

It was the size of a toaster, and captured black and white images at a resolution of 100×100 - or 0.01 megapixels in today’s marketing terminology. The images were stored on cassette tape, taking 23 seconds to write. The camera uses an ADC from Motorola, a bog-standard (for the 1970s) lens from a Kodak movie camera, and a CCD chip from Fairchild Semiconductor - the same technology that digital cameras still use today. To playback the images, a special computer and tape reader setup (pictured below) was built, outputting the grainy images on a standard TV. It took a further 23 seconds to read each image from tape.

World's Last Geochelone Abigdoni Tortoise

This handsome fellow is known as “Lonesome George,” and he is a 200-pound tortoise whose entire species' survival relies upon him mating with a similar species of giant tortoise. George is between 90 and 100 years old and has an expected lifespan of 150 years. Though he hit a “sexual prime” in his early nineties none of the giant tortoise eggs that he fertilized were viable, so for now he is still the world's last example of his breed.(Link | Photo)

World's fastest broadband

LONDON: A UK based telecoms and cable giant Virgin Media said it will test the world's fastest broadband as demand grows for lightning-quick internet connections.

The company said it planned to trial speeds of up to 1.5 gigabits per second - more than 10 times faster than its current fastest service of 100 megabits per second and 240 times quicker than the UK average.

It would mean that customers could download a high-quality movie or video game in 55 seconds, rather than the three hours and 40 minutes it would take with the current UK average speed of 6.2mb.

Trials of the super-fast internet connections will begin this month at four companies near Old Street, in London, dubbed the 'Silicon Roundabout', but the service will eventually be used in homes as well as offices.

The company said one of the greatest advantages of the 1.5gb service is not the speed, but the increased number of users who will be able to use the network simultaneously without interruption.

World's First Motel (1925): Motel Inn

Motel Inn in San Luis Obispo, California, is the world’s first motel. It was built in 1925 by LA architect Arthur Heineman, who coined the term motel meaning "motor hotel."

Motel Inn was originally called the Milestone Mo-Tel. Back then, one night stay was $1.25. Heineman couldn’t afford the trademark registration fee, so his competitors were able to use the word "motel." The motel is still in operation today.

Umbilical Cord iPhone Charger

Umbilical cord and iPhone are two things you probably never imagine landing in the same sentence, much less a gadget article's title. However, you should have known that the iPhone is capable of bridging all sorts of weird gaps. The media artist Mio I-zawa has managed to create the strangest iPhone accessory you will ever come across. Instead of plugging your iPhone into the usual cord, just imagine hooking it up to a squirming umbilical cord. Once it's plugged in the cord squirms it looks like it's trying to suck the life out of the iPhone, when in fact it's restoring the iPhone back to life. People wish you couldn't hear the electronic device moving so much. It almost kills the visual effect entirely, but it is still a cool gadget in all the wrong ways.(Link | Via)

Fasting Mexican gets her wish to see royal wedding

MEXICO CITY: A 19-year-old Mexican woman who fasted for 16 days in a bid for an invitation to the royal wedding of Prince William has finally been granted her wish.

Estibalis Chavez will be flown to London for the April 29 nuptials thanks to an anonymous benefactor, according to the Mexico daily, Milenio.

Chavez camped out in front of the British Embassy in Mexico City in February, refusing to eat, although officials at the embassy had told her she was fasting in vain.

Chavez lost 17 pounds (eight kilos) during her fast, and painted a portrait of Prince William and Kate Middleton, which the embassy also refused to deliver.

"I've been a fan of Lady Di since I was little and my mother's a fan as well," said Chavez. "And I promised myself I would go to a royal wedding," she told during her fast. (AFP)

Attractive men have long Ring Fingers

PARIS The longer a man's fourth or ring finger is compared to his index finger, the more likely he is to be judged attractive by women, according to a study released Wednesday.

The results, published in the British Royal Society's journal Biological Sciences, unveil intricate links between foetal exposure of males to hormones, the development of certain physical traits, and what turns on the opposite sex.

It also adds to a growing body of research -- conducted under the banner of evolutionary psychology -- suggesting that the drivers of human behaviour are found, more than previously suspected, in "nature" rather than "nurture."

Earlier studies had already shown that the size ratio between the fourth and second fingers, especially of the right hand, is a reliable indicator of the extent a man was exposed to testosterone while still in the womb.

The bigger the gap between a longer ring finger and a shorter index, the greater the likely impact of the hormone.

For the new study, scientists led by Camille Ferdenzi of the University of Geneva designed an experiment to find out if women are drawn to the telltale signs of high testosterone levels in men -- a symmetrical face, a deeper voice, a particular body odour -- who have this more "masculine" finger configuration.

More than 80 women university students between 18 and 34 looked at pictures of 49 similarly aged men, and were asked to evaluate them for masculinity and attractiveness.

Smaller groups of women listened to recordings of the male voices, and smelled samples of their body odour, taken from cotton pads worn under the arm for 24 hours.

"The aim was to understand what makes a man attractive," and whether at least some of those qualities "were in part conditioned by the foetal environment," Ferdenzi said in an interview.

For the visual test, the results were unambiguous. "The longer the ring finger compared to the index -- that is, the greater the exposure to testosterone -- the more attractive the face was rated," she said by phone.

"We also found that attractiveness and symmetry in the face are highly correlated."

Such a preference might have evolved to boost a female's chances of reproductive success through mating with a more virile partner, she said.

Surprisingly, however, women did not consistently tag the same men as "masculine".

Nor did their preferences for voice or odours correspond to the longer ring-finger males.

"There wasn't any relation between the 2D-4D" -- 2nd digit, 4th digit -- "ratio and the reactions of the women to odour," Ferdenzi said.

One reason, she speculated, may be that voice and body odour are more dependent on fluctuating levels of adult testosterone than on pre-natal testosterone.

The ring-index finger ratio has also proven to be a useful indicator for gauging the risk of prostate cancer, likewise tied to high levels of testosterone.

Research published in December showed that the chances of developing the disease drop by a third in men whose index finger is longer than their ring finger.

Other studies have also found a link between exposure to hormones before birth and the development of other diseases, including breast cancer and osteoarthritis. (AFP)

Woman freed from jaws of python

KANSAS CITY: A Kansas woman faces a charge of harboring a vicious animal after her pet python grabbed onto her neck and would not let go until a police officer intervened.

Chrystal Wilson of Lyons, Kan., took the eight-foot-long albino snake from its cage for feeding Tuesday when it clasped its jaws on the side of her neck, Police Chief Chris Detmer said Friday. Luckily, the snake has small teeth rather than sharp fangs, he said.

A child in the house called police. Officer Max Bryant forced the jaws of the snake apart with his hands. Bryant will get a citation for bravery from the Lyons City Council, Detmer said.

"There's not too many guys or women who would grab it by the end of the mouth like that," Detmer said. The snake was not wrapped around Wilson but she was reportedly visibly upset because she could not get it off her neck, Detmer said.

Wilson is in her mid 20s and moved to Lyons about a year ago, Detmer said. She was ordered to remove the snake from the home because it poses a risk to children there, he said. She received a misdemeanor citation for harboring the snake. (Reuters)

Romanian gifts for William & Kate

BUCHAREST: Romanian jeweller Ovidiu Paraianu has created two special rings and an ornamental key which he hopes to give to the Queen, her grandson Prince William and his fiancee Kate Middleton on the occasion of the prince's wedding.

Paraianu, a former coal miner from western Romania, has already created jewels for French first lady Carla Bruni as well as royalty in Spain and Saudi Arabia and told Reuters on Friday he would like to give his gifts to the royals personally.

The gold rings -- one for the queen and one for Kate -- are studded with diamonds and rubies and feature miniature maps of Great Britain. The key, which can be used a tie clip or as a brooch, is embossed with the initials K and W.

Paraianu declined to provide a value for the jewellery.

"They are presents, not anything else," he said. "The value is symbolic." (Reuters)

World's most premature baby born in Germany

BERLIN: A German woman gave birth to a one-pound baby after only 21 weeks and five days of pregnancy, making it the world's most premature baby to survive, the mass circulation Bild newspaper reported Saturday.

When Frieda was born on November 7 she measured 11 inches (28 centimetres) and weighed only one pound (460 grammes).

Five and a half months later, she is finally fit to leave the clinic in Fulda, western Germany, in the next few days, now weighing 7.7 pounds (3.5 kilos) for 50 centimetres (nearly 20 inches), the paper said.

Her twin brother Kilian died a few days after being born.

Professor Reinald Repp, director of the paediatric clinic, could not be reached on Saturday, but a doctor on duty said that "there is no foreseeable risk of after-effects for the moment" and that the little girl "should develop normally like any other child."

Repp told Bild that her survival was "a miracle" because generally babies born before 22 weeks have no chance because their lungs, heart and brain are not sufficiently developed.

"Frieda was kept in a completely sterile environment, with her breathing assisted and fed through her navel," he told the paper.

Any baby born before eight months of pregnancy is considered premature.
Very premature babies (less than 32 weeks) are considered at high risk of suffering developmental problems. (AFP)

'World's smelliest flower' bloom

GENEVA: Thousands of plant lovers have flocked to the northern Swiss city of Basel to see a giant, stinky flower bloom for the first time.

The Basel Botanical Gardens expects 10,000 people to see its amorphophallus titanum, or corpse flower, in full glory before the bloom wilts late Saturday or Sunday. The plant is 17 years old and has never bloomed before.

Visitors haven't been deterred by the strong stench of rotting flesh the flower emits to attract insects for pollination.

The 6.6-feet (2-meter) tall flower is native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra and the last one to bloom in Switzerland was 75 years ago.
Worldwide, there have been only 134 recorded blooms from artificial cultivation.

The titan arum or Amorphophallus titanum (from Ancient Greek amorphos, "without form, misshapen" + phallos, "phallus", and titan, "giant") is a flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. (The largest single flower is borne by the Rafflesia arnoldii; the largest branched inflorescence in the plant kingdom belongs to the Talipot palm, Corypha umbraculifera).

Due to its odor, which is reminiscent of the smell of a decomposing mammal, the titan arum is also known as a carrion flower, the "Corpse flower", or "Corpse plant" (Indonesian: bunga bangkai - bunga means flower, while bangkai means corpse or cadaver; for the same reason, the same title is also attributed to Rafflesia which, like the titan arum, also grows in the rainforests of Sumatra).

Living Keychains Are the New Craze in China

Live fish and small turtles sealed in plastic keychains have become increasingly popular items sold at subway entrances and train stations across China.

The living keychains containing Brazilian turtles or king fish swimming in colored water are considered good-luck charms by many Chinese, but animal protection groups are outraged and call them a perfect example of “pure animal abuse”. Business is booming according to Chinese online newspaper Global Times, which reports one fish and nine turtle rings have been sold in just five minutes, on Tuesday, at the Sihui subway station, in Beijing.

According to vendors, the colored water in the 7-centimeter-long keychains contains nutrients that allow fish and turtles to live inside for months. While that may be true, Mary Peng, cofounder of the International Center for Veterinary Services, says they couldn’t survive in the sealed bag for very long, due to lack of oxygen.

While animal rights activists are protesting loudly against the sale of living keychains, there isn’t much else they can do, because China only has a Wild Animal Protection Law – if the animals are not wild animals they fall outside the law’s scope. Until the law changes to protect all kinds of animals, activists can only appeal to people not to buy them, and hope the market will die due to lack of customers.

Although some people buy these bizarre keychains to carry around for good-luck, there are those who buy them just to free the poor creatures from their tiny plastic cage.

World’s Biggest Hamburger

Ted Reader, one of the most famous celebrity chefs in the world, has prepared a giant hamburger, in an attempt to put his name in the Guinness Book of Records.

The cooking process of the world’s biggest hamburger began at 4 am, on Thursday, when a giant beef patty was placed on a custom barbecue, to slow cook. The burger was unveiled at noon, and it caught the eye of dozens of Toronto passers-by. It was topped off with all the fixings you’d find in an average burger, including lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and barbecue sauce.

The 590 lbs-heavy burger was made with 300 pounds of meat, which makes it three times as heavy as the current record holder. Guinness is yet to acknowledge Ted Reader’s record, but it’s only a matter of time.

The making of the world’s biggest hamburger is part of a marketing tour to promote Ted Reader’s latest cook book, Napoleon’s Everyday Gourmet Burgers. It contains 110 different burger recipes.

Lego Mp3 Player

The "Homade LEGO MP3 player" is neither home-made nor officially a LEGO product, but its clever design—each nub is a button—is almost enough to convince me to make a purchase, despite a price of $46 with no built-in memory (it takes micro SD) and a size considerably larger than a real LEGO element. (we can't quite figure out exactly how large the player might be, although we doubt it's 24 centimeters long as is stated on the product page. It uses a single AA battery for power, though, so that should give some rough idea.)... (Link)

Justin Bieber’s Lookalike Is a Girl

Dani Shay, a 22-year-old American folk singer from Orlando, Florida, has become famous for being a spitting image of teenage pop sensation Justin Bieber.

As if you hadn’t had enough of Justin Bieber, right? Well, I’m sorry to torture you like this but I thought this news was pretty funny. A video of Shay doing a cover of Eminem and Rihanna’s “I love the way you lie” has recently become viral after viewers were shocked at the striking resemblance between the singer and Bieber. Some even thought it was a hoax and that Justin Bieber was actually the one performing in the video.

But this is old news for Dani Shay who says that even before she knew who Justin Bieber was, no matter where she went, people asked her for photos and autographs. Now, being assaulted by mobs of crazy fans everywhere she goes is all in a day’s work for the talented Florida singer. She’s gotten used to it and even describes herself as a “lesbian who looks like Justin Bieber, but is uniquely different in her own ways”, on her Facebook page.

The Most Tattooed Woman in the World

With various tattoos covering 95% of her body, Julia Gnuse has been acknowledged as the world’s most tattooed woman.

What started out as a desperate solution to cover up lesions, caused by a severe skin condition, turned into a true passion, that earned Julia Gnuse a spot in the Guinness Book of Records, for the most tattooed woman on Earth. Miss Gnuse, also known as the “Illustrated Lady” suffers from porphyria, a disease that causes the skin to blister when exposed to sunlight. When doctors told her the only medicine that could help her, could also induce blinding, she decided to turn to tattoos, to cover the blisters on her legs.

A plastic surgeon suggested she tattoo her body the same color as the blisters, but since that was so hard to reproduce, she settled for some really colorful tattoos. At first it was just her legs, than she moved up to her stomach, arms and back, and be fore she knew it she was hooked on ink. She just kept adding tattoos, ranging from cartoons, film characters to jungle scenes.

All of Julia Gnuse’s tattoos were done by the same artists.
